Child Protection Roster Mediator Details

2008
My areas of specialization are primarily working with Indigenous families in Metro Vancouver on and off reserve. I have specific training in capacity issues, Mental Health and Addiction, Traditional Decision Making, and working with families experiencing Domestic Violence. My practice is relational through building relationships with families and communities with the goal to leave people in a better place post mediation.

I enjoy facilitating cultural plans as part of child protection mediation for children and youth, as culture is a protective factor and provides Indigenous people with a strong foundation.
I am from the Cree Nation of Peguis, Manitoba and have been a visitor in the Coast Salish territory since 1992. I have been working collaboratively with Indigenous children, youth and families for over 20 years, specializing in working with urban Indigenous people both on and off reserve in the Metro Vancouver area. My academic background includes a Bachelor Degree of Social Work from UFV in 2005 (specializing in mental health and addictions) and a Masters Degree of Social Work from UBC in 2010 (specializing in Aboriginal child welfare policy and practice).

My recent experience includes Douglas College as Faculty and Coordinator for the Aboriginal Child, Family, and Community Studies Program, Faculty in the Child and Youth Care Counselling Program, and the Social Work Program. My post graduate experience includes working in Aboriginal child welfare in family preservation and reunification, addictions counselling, mental health and wellness counselling, urban Indigenous child welfare policy analysis, family group conferencing, traditional decision making, and child protection mediation. My passion is to improve the quality of life of Aboriginal children, youth, and families through cultural restoration and pride.

Currently, I have transitioned into full time private practice as a child protection mediator, consultant, and trainer. I provide training for professionals in the helping field in the areas of Cultural Competency, Child Welfare Legislation and Policy that guide our practice in British Columbia.
