Remembering Chris Harris

Posted by Amanda.Semenoff

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Chris Harris.

Chris was an active member of our conflict resolution community and jokingly self-identified as a reformed lawyer having been called to the BC Bar in 1981. As well as his law degree from Dalhousie, Chris received a BA (McGill) and MA (UBC) in Political Science.

As a mediator, Chris conducted both Civil and Family mediations.  He began his practice as a member of the Provincial Court Civil Roster, where he conducted more than 400 civil mediations. When that program ended in 2016, Chris shifted his focus back to family practice, a field he had worked in as a young lawyer.

Chris had a generosity of spirit and kind heart that welcomed newcomers to the field. He supported his friends and colleagues and was always happy to talk through a practice issue or ethical question that arose. Chris was a vibrant and caring participant in many mediation-focused communities of practice, including the Court Mediation Program monthly meetings, the Vancouver Mediators Lounge, and more recently the Quarantine Conflict Resolution Service and CoRe’s online meet-ups.

Chris died from a massive heart attack on Saturday July 4, 2020 while on a sailing trip through the Gulf Islands with friends. He always loved to travel and even found a way to do so in the time of COVID-19. He collected an extraordinary number of friends around the globe in his travels and an in-person Celebration of Life will be planned once we are able to gather together again.

In Lieu of Flowers please consider donating to Covenant House or the BC SPCA, two charities that meant a lot to Chris.

Virtual Celebration of Life
August 20, 2020 6pm - 7:30pm PDT on zoom
Join CoRe and Vancouver Mediators' Lounge for an online celebration of life for Chris Harris. Bring a quarantini (or favourite beverage) and a story to share. Chris’ last Mediator’s Lounge Quarantini was a dry gin martini with 3 olives. Gather with us online to raise a toast and remember.

Pre-Registration is required for this event.
