Call for Presentations

Posted by mbcstaff

Do you have an interesting idea to present at a future-focused, cross-border conference with a theme of deconstructing artificial borders?

Mediate BC, the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC (CLEBC), CoRe Conflict Resolution Society, the Washington State Bar Association’s Section of Alternative Dispute Resolution (WSBA ADR) and Mediate.com are joining together to present a cross-border conference focused on conflict resolution on October 21st and 22nd (with an opening night event on October 20th). The conference will be presented online, and organizers will work to offer optional in-person meet-ups where possible. The conference will offer a mix of practical skill building workshops and examinations of conflict resolution theory across disciplines.

The overarching conference theme is “Deconstructing Artificial Borders” and invited speakers will offer insights in the context of national borders, Indigenous law and practice, environmental conflict, workplace disputes including the use of NDAs ins mediation and arbitration, and the use of technology in conflict resolution.

An important focus of the conference is building on the collective wisdom of our entire community – and learning from our neighbours – as we bring together practitioners from up and down the West Coast of Canada and the US.

See more details on the conference and Canadian registration here. American registration details available here.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Time is set aside in the conference schedule for short presentations of 6, 15 or 30 minutes. We encourage mediators, arbitrators, lawyers, academics, and others involved in the practice of conflict resolution to share their ideas in one of these short sessions. All sessions will be presented online, so speakers can be located anywhere they have adequate bandwidth.

What interesting idea about dispute resolution and/or deconstructing borders would you like to share?

Topics should be relevant to the field of Conflict Resolution and connect to the conference theme, including how human-created borders or barriers can contribute to, deepen and prolong conflicts.

Some ideas to stimulate your creativity include:

  • Creating/Breaking down geographic (artificial) borders or invisible borders
  • Borders and COVID-19
  • Masks/barriers and communication
  • Animal conservation/animals crossing borders (orcas, fish, "wolves only highway", etc.)
  • Wildfires/weather and borders
  • Climate change/environmental concerns and conflicts
  • River conflicts
  • Dichotomous thinking and how to engage polarized parties in meaningful discourse
  • Inter-faith discussions
  • Silos of practice and possibilities of hybrid practices, multi-disciplinary approaches, etc.
  • Personal and communal grief
  • The use of technology to cross time and space borders

Conference dates: October 21, 2021 (9:00am-8:00pm) AND October 22 (9:00am-4:00pm)

Opening night keynote: October 20, 2021 (6:00-8:00pm) - free and open to the public

Proposal deadline: August 31, 2021

All conference sessions will be presented online. If possible, some in-person viewing and networking opportunities will be organized. Please include in your proposal any creative ways you wish to engage with both an in person and remote audience.
