2014 BCAMI Symposium: BC is making history in ADR!
The 2014 BCAMI Symposium will provide a valuable opportunity for ADR professionals to interact with leading thinkers in the field as they discuss current issues and new developments.
The Keynote Speaker, Hon. Thomas Berger Q.C., former Supreme Court Justice, Counsel for the Nisga’a Nation at the Supreme Court, Alaska Native Review Commission (“Village Journey”), Mackenzie Pipeline Commission, Author: “One Man’s Justice”, “Fragile Freedoms”, “A Long and Terrible Shadow”, will share stories and insights from his memorable career, updating us on his recent work in First Nations issues.
In addition, the Symposium will offer panels covering some of the most important and current issues in ADR in BC.
The first panel, “Facing Future: Maintaining the Edge in Early Settlement Options”, will provide an update on the progress of the Civil Resolution Tribunal which is now expected to begin in April 2015. This discussion will look at what the Civil Resolution Tribunal is. This panel brings the opportunity to understand and discuss the impacts and implications of these changes, which will certainly affect all ADR practitioners in BC.
How it is expected to replace the Small Claims Court in addition to Strata Claims? What is the time line for transition from the time-honoured Small Claims Court system? Who will the Case Officers be? What are the skills required from Case Officers? Who will be using the Tribunal? What is the role of intervener and/or facilitators when they are necessary?
Moderated by Lee Turnbull, David Merner, Executive Director at the Dispute Resolution Office, Justice Services Branch, BC Ministry of Justice; and Darin Thompson; Legal Counsel at the Dispute Resolution Office, Justice Services Branch, BC Ministry of Justice, will share their insights on this ambitious and exciting project.
The second panel, “Trends and Opportunities within ADR”, will provide their insights into new developments and professional opportunities for arbitrators and mediators in the areas of environment, aboriginal issues and construction. The featured panelists include Gary Fitzpatrick Q.C., Chartered Arbitrator, Chartered Mediator; John Sanderson Q.C., Chartered Arbitrator, Chartered Mediator; and John Logan, Managing Partner, Jenkins Marzban Logan LLP.
In the last panel, “A Discussion in Med-Arb: Ethics and Dilemmas in Role-Switching”, Carol W. Hickman Q.C.; Marjorie L. Thompson; and Arlene H. Henry Q.C. will explore and debate the ethical considerations when switching roles while leading mediation/arbitration processes.
The Symposium is approved for 3.5 units of CPD by The Law Society of BC and 1.0 unit of CPD by The Society of Notaries Public of BC.
