Civil Roster Mediator Details

2014
I offer mediation and facilitation for any number of parties to a dispute, including multi-party disputes. I am also pleased to work with both represented and non-represented parties in mediations and facilitations. Additionally, I provide workplace mediation and stakeholder facilitation services. I am pleased to offer virtual mediations or travel on an as-needed basis. I may be able to provide mediation facilities, depending on the number of participants and the needs of the parties.
I also provide conflict coaching and mediation skills training workshops to organizations, including individually tailored full- and half-day workshops.
I am a mediator trained to mediate all types of civil disputes. I have experience dealing with employment-related matters, human rights issues, claims of harassment, personal injury, commercial and contractual disputes including debt, strata, tenancy and other housing-related issues, and insurance coverage issues. I am a roster mediator for the BC Human Rights Tribunal, as well as at the Law Society of British Columbia for their fee mediation program.

I believe that mediation is empowering to those involved in it. I appreciate the opportunity to listen to each party, assist them in determining which issues are important to them, and finally assist them in reaching a resolution of some or all of those issues. The ability to have control over the outcome of a party's own dispute or issue leads to greater satisfaction with the eventual outcome.

In addition to my mediation practice, I am a lawyer at my own firm, Syer Law. I endeavor to take a practical approach with my clients, including encouraging early settlement and alternative dispute resolution. I believe it is generally in clients' best interests to resolve legal disputes without the need for protracted litigation. I also volunteer my time on various boards and committees, including being a board member for Mediate BC.

Outside of law and mediation, I am a regular participant in the theater community, both on the stage and behind the scenes. I am also an avid skier, photographer, and love to cook.

In addition to my hourly fee, the parties are required for any reasonable disbursements, including travel or room rentals when required. I do not charge for things like copying, scanning, etc.

I have a minimum four hour charge for all mediations, unless I have agreed in writing to waive this requirement.

Depending on circumstances of the parties, I may be willing to negotiate different rates.
If a mediation is canceled fewer than 7 days prior to the scheduled mediation, the parties will be charged for time actually spent preparing for the mediation. If a mediation is canceled fewer than 48 hours prior the scheduled mediation, the four hour minimum fee will apply. Any non-refundable travel or venue disbursements will be due, regardless of when the mediation is canceled.
