Civil Roster Mediator Details

2014
I offer mediation and facilitation for any number of parties to a dispute, including multi-party disputes. I am also pleased to work with both represented and non-represented parties in mediations and facilitations. Additionally, I provide workplace mediation and stakeholder facilitation services. I am pleased to offer virtual mediations or travel on an as-needed basis. I may be able to provide mediation facilities, depending on the number of participants and the needs of the parties.
I am a mediator trained to mediate all types of civil disputes. My focus has been primarily on employment-related matters, commercial and contractual disputes, commercial debt and collection, and tenancy and housing-related issues. I also have experience dealing with human rights issues, claims of harassment, personal injury, and insurance coverage issues. I am interested in continuing to grow my practice areas, and welcome mediations in any type of civil dispute.

I believe that mediation is empowering to those involved in it. I appreciate the opportunity to listen to each party, assist them in determining what issues are most important, and finally assist them in reaching a resolution of some or all of those issues. The ability to have control over the outcome of a party's own dispute or issue leads to greater satisfaction with the eventual outcome.

In addition to my mediation practice, I am a lawyer at my own firm, Syer Law. I endeavor to take a practical approach with my clients, including encouraging early settlement and alternative dispute resolution. I believe it is generally in clients' best interests to resolve legal disputes without the need for protracted litigation. I volunteer some of my time with the Access Pro Bono civil chambers program, and am on the board of Mediate BC.

Outside of law and mediation, I am a regular participant in the theater community, both on the stage and behind the scenes. I am also an avid skier, photographer, and love to cook.

In addition to my hourly fee, the parties are required for any reasonable disbursements, including travel. I do not charge for things like copying, scanning, etc.

I have a minimum four hour charge for all mediations, unless I have agreed in writing to waive this requirement.

Depending on circumstances of the parties, I may be willing to negotiate different rates.
If a mediation is canceled more than 5 business days prior to the scheduled mediation, the parties will be charged for time actually spent preparing for the mediation. If a mediation is canceled between 5-2 business days prior to the scheduled mediation, two hours of the agreed upon hourly fee will be charged, or the amount of time actually spent preparing for the mediation, if greater than two hours. If mediation is canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled mediation, the four hour minimum fee will apply. In addition, any non-refundable travel or venue disbursements shall be payable.
