Ready to Launch: the Child Support Eligibility Mediation Project

Mediate BC is piloting a mediation model helping families resolve disputes concerning the eligibility of adult children for child support and special expenses.

The Child Support Eligibility Mediation Project is being carried out in collaboration with the Family Maintenance Enforcement Program and is funded by the Law Foundation of British Columbia and the Director of Maintenance Enforcement. Project Coordinators Yuki Matsuno and Shelina Neallani are our guest bloggers today with a message describing the project and inviting families to participate in the pilot.  

About the Child Support Eligibility Mediation Project:

We help families with adult children plan for their educational future.  You may be eligible for up to 6 hours of free mediation services if you can answer “YES” to the following questions:

1. Is your child:

•  Currently in Grade 12 and making plans for her/his educational future?

OR

•  Aged 19 or over and is currently enrolled, or is planning to enroll, in an educational program?

2. Are you and the child’s other parent either separated or divorced?

3. Would you like to have an opportunity, with the assistance of a very experienced and qualified mediator, to discuss your child’s future with your child and the other parent, and come up with an educational plan to launch your child into his/her exciting new phase of life?

If your answer to the questions above is “YES”, contact us for the CSEMP. Some referrals are now available to the general public. Act quickly as the number of opportunities for up to six hours of free mediation services is limited!

Please note:

•  Mediations will be conducted in person, over the telephone, or using other distance mediation technology as appropriate for the parties and the mediator.

• Project mediators will use a range of mediation techniques, ranging from interest-based facilitative techniques to evaluative techniques, to help the parties reach an agreement.

• Project mediators will also ensure that the voice of the adult child is heard in the mediation in a way that is appropriate for each individual case.

• Parties will be required to participate in the project evaluation.
