Benefits of Being a Roster Mediator

Roster Benefits

Being a member of Mediate BC’s Civil and /or Family Rosters has many benefits including:

  • Eligibility for appointment under British Columbia's Notice to Mediate Regulations, including the Notice to Mediate Regulation for motor vehicle actions, the Notice to Mediate (Residential Construction) and Homeowner Protection Regulations, the Notice to Mediate (General) Regulation, and the Education Mediation Regulation. When parties are unable to agree on the selection of a mediator under these regulations, the Society appoints a mediator using the process contained in the regulations. (Available to Civil Roster members only.)
  • Eligibility for appointment under Small Claims Rule 7.3 - Mediation for Claims Between $10,000 and $25,000. When parties are unable to agree on the selection of a mediator under Rule 7.3, the Society appoints a mediator using the process contained in the Rule. (Available to Civil Roster members only.)
  • Eligibility to mediate personal injury claims involving the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). In 2002, ICBC announced that mediators wishing to mediate ICBC claims would be required to be members of the Civil Roster of the Mediate BC Society.
  • Eligibility to a professional liability insurance program, providing mediators and arbitrators, errors and omissions insurance at a group rate, established for members of Mediate BC's Civil and Family Rosters.
  • Space for an individual entry on the Society's web site Directory of Mediators. Information about Civil and Family Roster members' contact points, background and mediation services is posted in their individual entry. All of the information in the on-line Directory is searchable, and can be updated through the Society office at any time. Individual members' photographs can also be accommodated in the Directory.
  • Province-wide exposure, resulting from the Society's ongoing work to promote mediation and the Rosters. These promotional activities are described in the Society's monthly electronic newsletter.
  • An individual listing in the Canadian Bar Association's (B.C. Branch) Lawyers Directory (Professional Services section).
  • Mediate BC offers practice support through teleconferences and web-based learning opportunities on best practice issues, and periodic workshops and conferences for Roster members. Materials held in Mediate BC's Conflict Resolution Library may be borrowed by members of the Society's Civil and Family Rosters located anywhere in the province. There is no charge to members, other than any costs incurred in returning the materials to the library. A current list of materials in the library, along with a description of each individual item, and a copy of the Society's Lending Policy are posted in the member’s only section of the website.
  • Notification of job and professional development opportunities relating to the field of dispute resolution is distributed via e-mail to interested Roster members.
