Family Roster Mediation Details
Special skills:
I have significant skills and experience as an adjudicator (14 years as a district registrar/the Registrar of the Supreme Court of British Columbia). Although I am trained in and practice “interests-based” mediation techniques, my experience on the court gives me credibility as a mediator and allows me, when appropriate, to bring an evaluative focus to the parties at mediation. As well, as a former judicial officer, I truly understand the commercial (economic) and personal (emotional) benefits of resolving matters without a trial.

Services offered:
Mediation: I mediate two party to multi-party disputes.
Co-mediation: I offer co-mediation services in family disputes with Kamaljit Lehal (of Lehal Law), particularly in the South Asian community (as Kamaljit speaks fluent Punjabi, understands Hindi and brings knowledge of the South Asian culture to our mediations). Co-mediation provides for less downtime in the caucus room as well as a deeper perspective being maintained by the co-mediators. In general, the co-mediation model results in an overall better experience for participants. Also, given the different skill-sets of Kamaljit and me, we are able to bring a balanced and targeted approach to our co-mediations.

$400 - $400 / hour

I am willing to provide mediation services where one or both parties is represented by legal aid.

I do not charge for my travel time (only my reasonable travel expenses) but if travel is outside the Lower Mainland then a minimum booking (5 hours) may apply.

Currently my co-mediation services are offered at the combined rate of $400/hour.

If cancellation occurs at least one week prior to the mediation date, then there are no cancellation fees. If the mediation is cancelled within seven days of the scheduled mediation date, and not rescheduled, the party cancelling the mediation pays a cancellation fee of $1,000.00.

I was called to the BC Bar in 1986 and, until 1997, I practised in a number of areas including family, corporate/commercial, entertainment and securities law. I become Legal Counsel to the Chief Justice and Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1997 and, in 2001, I was appointed a district registrar of the BC Supreme Court. In 2010 I was elevated to the position of Registrar of the Court. I retired from the Court in 2014 and have “repurposed” as a mediator, arbitrator and litigation consultant.

During my many years with the Supreme Court, I dealt with a wide variety of matters from a number of perspectives including conducting references to a registrar (in the family law and wills and estates area, as well as real estate and bankruptcy and insolvency matters), reviewing lawyers bills, and assessing bills of costs. In performing my duties, I came to understand the architecture of most civil litigation matters. Having come to understand the economic and emotional costs of litigation, I gained an interest in assisting parties in resolving their disputes using consensual dispute resolution. I got my mediation training at Harvard Law School (Program on Negotiation) in 2012 and through the American Arbitration Association University in 2013.

In addition to my work as a mediator, I am the current vice-chair of the CBABC Women Lawyers Forum, and a volunteer with a number of community and non profit organisations including the Burnaby Public Library (Trustee) and Charlford House (an addiction recovery house for women).

I am excited to be providing mediation services to clients in family and civil matters. I believe I have the skills and the experience required to mediate most disputes but am focusing my new career on mediating disputes in the areas of family law, wills and estates, personal injury, and disability.
