How do Parties Choose a Civil Mediator?

It is important for the parties to select a mediator in whom they have confidence and with whom they are comfortable.  It is a good idea to do some research before making a selection.

Find out about the mediation process and the different styles used by mediators. Contact more than one mediator and ask them for resumes and references, and other relevant information including:
    • Are they are a listed with a recognized roster or mediation organization?
    • Do they have experience in this particular type of conflict?
    • Do they abide by a professional code of conduct for mediators?
    • What do they charge, and how is payment made?
The parties’ lawyers may have some suggestions of mediators they have worked with before.
We suggest starting by looking at Mediate BC's online Roster of Civil Mediators
